Who is Antonio Banderas’ First Wife, Ana Leza?


Ana Leza is a Spanish actress famous for being the ex-wife of Antonio Banderas who is a famous Spanish actor, producer, director, and singer.

Born Ana Arana Leza in Madrid, Spain, she is the daughter of the late actress María de la Concepción Leza Núñez (aka Concha Leza). Her mother is known for Foul Play, Outrage, and Hospital Central, and has over 89 acting credits under her name.

Ana has married twice in her life; she’s currently married to her partner Dharma Villareal. Let’s get to know more about her.

Ana Leza and Antonio Banderas shared their wedding vows on July 27, 1987, at the Church of San Nicolas in Madrid in a big event. They dated for six months before tying the knot.

During their time together, Leza helped her husband find a prime spot in Hollywood. As Antonio was not good at English, she also helped him learn English. While talking with Vanity Fair, Antonio revealed how she helped her build confidence.

She helped me translate the script for Los Reyes del Mambo, to work on it, she gave me a lot of confidence. Without her, I would not have gotten the role.

Why did Ana and Antonio Separate? Divorce Settlement?

After nine years of marriage, in 1996, Ana and Antonio decided to separate. The reason for their divorce was probably Banderas’ affair with his second wife, Melanie Griffith.

In 2004, while talking with journalist Jesús Quintero about the divorce settlement, Antonio revealed how he had an eight day trial and how he had to pay a huge alimony to his ex-spouse.

They left me worse than … It was eight days of trial. It is a business. What the judge wants to know is how much you are going to pay your partner. They grab you by the foot, they shake you and, when the last one is over dollar, they leave you. That’s what they did to me

The court ordered Antonio to pay 12,000 euros ($14,098.98) per month and 50% benefits from all of his movies during their marriage. Ana also received a $3.995 million house located in Madrid. Following their divorce, she rarely makes an appearance in the media. She has also left acting ever since.

Ana Leza’s Second Marriage with Dharma Villareal

Four years after her divorce from Antonio Banderas, Ana Leza walked down the aisle with her second husband, Dharma Villareal. They married on November 6, 2000, in Santa Barbara, California. Her second husband is an editor and documentarian at the Xerox company.

Together they share two daughters: Clara María and Sofía Macarena. The family of four is actively involved with Siddha Yoga Meditation (SYDA) Foundation. They are all followers of the Hindu saint and founder of Siddha Yoga, Swami Muktananda.

While talking about her ex-husband, he got married to Melanie Griffith, the same year of his divorce on May 14, 1996, in London. On September 24 of the same year, they welcomed their daughter, Stella del Carmen Banderas.

He couldn’t hold on to his second marriage as well. They announced their divorce in June 2014 before filing for separation in Los Angeles Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences. Their divorce finalized in December 2015. Though they’ve divorced, they remain good friends. His stepdaughter, Dakota Johnson calls him a “bonus dad”.

Brief Acting Career

Ana Leza started her acting journey from her appearance in Teresa de Jesus in 1984 and in the same year, she was cast in a mini-series, Frangmentos de interior.

After several years, she was seen in a Spanish black comedy-drama film, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown alongside her ex-husband. She also had cameo appearances in De Amor y Sombra and Philadelphia. Some of her other on-screen credits include Hay Que Zurrar a Los Pobres, and La Mujer de Tu Vida, among others.
