Jakob James Nowell is a songwriter and the lead singer of the band named Law. Besides, he is also famous for being the son of late American singer and guitarist, Bradley Nowell.

Born on June 25, 1995, in Long Beach, California, he is the only kid of Bradley and his wife, Troy Dendekker. Jakob has three half-siblings: Erica Angel, Mary Jane, and Rudi Holmes from his mother’s marriage with Keith Holmes (Kiki Holmes).

Lost His Father a Year After His Birth

Jakob James Nowell lost his father Bradley Nowell too early in his life. His father died at the age of 28 on May 25, 1996, due to an overdose of heroin. At the time of his father’s death, he was just 11 months old.

Bradley took his last breath at the Ocean View Motel in San Francisco where he was staying with his band members. Bud Gaugh, one of his band members, found him unconscious. When the paramedics arrived, he was already dead. He had died several hours earlier. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered around his favorite surfing spot in Surfside, California.  

His Parents Were Married for Only a Week

Jakob James Nowell’s parents, Bradley Nowell and Troy Dendekker were married for only a week. The pair, who first met in 1994, started dating soon after their first encounter. After a few months, Troy became pregnant and welcomed their first and only child, Jakob on June 25, 1995.

A year after their child’s birth, on May 18, 1996, they walked down the aisle in a Hawaiian-themed wedding in Las Vegas. However, their marriage ended just a week into their marriage following Nowell’s demise.

Engaged to Ashlyn Zeda

The 26-years-old, Jakob James Nowell is currently engaged to a lady named Ashlyn Zeda. The pair first met in 2014 and have been together ever since.

The pair got engaged on September 22, 2019. Nowell took to his socials including Facebook and Instagram to share the pictures of their beautiful day with the caption, “Yay! “. On the other hand, his partner also shared the same post on Instagram writing,

The craziest thing happened today , We are engaged !!!! @saharaelise took these pictures !!!

Jakob’s mom also seems to support their relationship and have a good realtionship with Ashlyn.

Following Father’s Footstep

Like most of the celebrity kids, Jakob James Nowell has also preferred to follow in his father’s footsteps. Since his childhood, he was interested in music and had learned guitar with his maternal grandfather. Now, he has chosen his profession as the lead singer of the band, LAW.

The band was founded in Long Beach, California, and is based out of Los Angeles County. The other members of the band include Aidan Palacios (Guitar), Logun Spellacy (Bass), and Nick Aguilar (Drums). They released their first full-length album, There and Back Again on November 23, 2018.

Battle with Addiction

The only son of late singer Bradley Nowell also faced addiction for around a decade. According to him, he started drinking at the age of 12.

Jakob’s struggle is shown in the documentary, The Long Way Back: The Story of Todd “Z-Man” Zalkins. After Bradley’s death, his close friend, Zalkins started his battle against opioids. He was able to break free of addiction thanks to prescription pain killers and dedicates his life to help others who suffer from addiction. Zalkins comes across Jakob and helps him overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

While recalling those days, Jakob says,

Life is very different, and it’s so much f***ing better. But for the longest time, it was a struggle. It was fun. A lot of people say this — it was fun, and then it was fun with problems, then it was just problems.

Nowell Family Foundation

Jakob Nowell along with his family started the Nowell Family Foundation in the year 2017. The main motto of their organization is to provide financial help to musicians seeking treatment for addiction. Jakob’s aunt, Kellie Nowell is working as an executive director of the foundation.

The organization is raising funds to open Bradley’s House, a six-bed recovery facility which to provides proper treatment to those who are struggling with addiction and lacking help.

Back in December 2018, while being interviews by Billboard, Jakob said,

Right now, we’re putting on benefit shows, and I’m trying to raise awareness. The Sublime cover band Burritos is playing a benefit show on the 22nd of this month at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa [Calif.]. There’s a lot of stuff going on right now, where we’re trying to raise awareness for the organization.

Nowell talk about his plan for Nowell Family Foundation.

Well, the singer who was also addicted to drugs and alcohol for over a decade is now working as an advocate for drugs and addiction to create a drug-free world.
